It is 2 PM. You had a coffee at 8 and nothing since. There is a bowl of candy two desks over, and you can already feel how this goes.
Most apps have nothing to say about this moment. They will show you a number tomorrow.
A mate has something to say right now, and it is not "you failed."
Here is what I wish someone had told me, and what I would say to a friend:
1. Do not punish the morning with a bad afternoon. Skipping breakfast is not a crime. Eating nothing until 9 PM to make up for it is how people end up face down in the pantry.
2. Get protein in now, not at 4 PM. Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, a protein shake. Anything real that you can get to in five minutes. (General nutrition info, check labels for the numbers.)
3. Decide the next meal before you are hungry. The version of you at 6 PM, starving, makes worse calls than the version of you at 2 PM with a plan.
That is the whole trick. It is not a secret algorithm. It is someone noticing what you told them and speaking up while there is still time to do something about it.
